I got to use my expertise for good this week (and get paid for it!). As part of my lab assistant job in the Psychology wing, I was asked to go along with another Wolf Research Team group and show them how to do a howl survey. On my VERY first howl in the O'Brien Lake wilderness, I get an entire pack of coyotes responding. They proceeded to respond to every howl we did for the next 3 miles and drown out any wolf responses we might have been getting, but it was very very cool. Even better, the Northern Lights continued their display from the previous night, and danced all along the horizon.
To make it even better, I got news today that the team went back out to the place where we howled, and the place was LITTERED with wolf tracks (including one gigantic paw print at 5"x6"). That means they heard us! The pack was obviously close by and heard us, but didn't respond (which isn't surprising considering the coyotes). That's the best results I've ever gotten on a howl survey, and something of a personal affirmation of everything of I've learned about wolves these past few years. Anyways...I just had to squee about that.
