Ramdom musings

I was flipping through the channels and accidently found MacGyver. Holy crap. The plots (and hairstyles) are so hideous it hurts, but RDA has not changed a bit. Well, OK, the hair thankfully did improve, but it's the same mannerisms, facial expressions, voice...in short, I squeeed (what the heck is the past tense of squee?) like the fangirl I am. I might have to watch more of that ;)

Oh good LORD I forgot how much I love Sally Reeve. I save her fics as back-up when I really need a good read, and today I did ;) So I'm starting in on "Crossing the Line", and I'm just blown away by how WONDERFUL her writing is. She consistently writes well, so even though her fics are long, I can be blown away several times in just a few pages. Certain lines just jump out at me.
"It was no fairytale. She was no princess, and there'd be no happy ending."
"and in that look ignited a flame that, until then, he'd done a reasonable job of keeping at bay. Before it had been smoldering, now it was a fire twenty feet high."
"because of this thing that had grown between them, this thing that they had deliberately stunted before it could blossom. And now it couldn't grow, and it wouldn't die."
Obviously these don't make much sense out of context, and probably don't even sound that brilliant, but in the flow of the writing...it just stops me dead. And the great thing is, there are pages upon pages more of this. It really makes me wonder why she put all that time and talent into writing fics, when she could obviously do so much more. But I am insanely grateful for it.

I am becoming more and more like my dad every day. He was always a history buff: loved reading about it and watching documentaries on the History Channel. It never did much for me. But today, I was enthralled by a PBS documentary on slavery and the civil war. Absolutely enthralled, and I wanted to know more. PBS documentaries and the like have always been a weak point for me. In Astronomy lately we have watched two videos - Nova's The Elegant Universe and Carl Sagan's Cosmos. I've seen both before, but I'm still fascinated by them. Strangely enough, college usually does not provide the intellectual stimulation I thought it would.

Date: 2005-02-17 12:08 pm (UTC)History! Yay! Am glad to see another person
turning to the dark sideliking history. :D And I get one you mean about becoming like your dad. I've noticed a disturbing amount of similarities between my habits and my dad's lately. *lol*no subject
Date: 2005-02-19 07:25 pm (UTC)I know! My sister becomes more and more like my mom every year, and me, more like my dad. History buffs, yay! ;)
Oh, and hey! We're busy putting back together Creative, and somebody mentioned deleting the old "our voices" sticky in OT Chat, so I was checking out the thread (which we decided to keep 'cause it kept most of it's attachments), and I found a voice clip you had posted...*LOL* So I was listening to your recording last night and going "so THAT'S Noelle! Hee!"

Date: 2005-02-19 09:03 pm (UTC)White Out (http://home.comcast.net/~lytarules/whiteout/whiteoutwarning.html) by Lyta was a pretty good long ship fic.
Good Morning, Campers (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1746343/1/), is a pretty amusing fic (with ship) if you can get over some early bumps and a general unbelievableness *L*
I really ridiculously enjoyed the first half of Twilight (http://outoftheroom.homestead.com/TWILIGHThome.html)...didn't enjoy the second half as much, but it's still worth the read.
Oh, and Seven Days-
The Mis-Adventures of Jack and Sam (http://home.earthlink.net/~dietcokechic/sevendays.html) was also quite memorable.
Does Suz's Semiprecious (http://www.sjhw.net/suzvoy/semiprecious.html) count? It's not quite novel length, but pretty long and REALLY enjoyable.
All of these are as close as I have found to novel-length, and they're all fairly good. You may have read some or even all of them...but these are ones I remembered *L*
